Yousry Sharif is internationally celebrated as a choreographer and instructor of Middle Eastern Dance. Based in New York City, he established The Egyptian Academy of Oriental Dance where he hones new students to his richly expressive and unique style and has created an impressive contingent of professional proteges. Over the years, his popularity has grown to such an extent that he tours the globe eight months of the year to headline seminars as a guest artist/instructor. A partial list of his annual workshops includes journeys to Sweden, Finland, Asia, Latin America, Europe, Egypt, and Australia.

An innovative and incredibly musical artist, Yousry explores movement and music from folklore to oriental cabaret and seamlessly infuses traditional and contemporary dance elements from the ethnic flamenco, jazz, ballet, to modern genres. He is one of the few contemporary artists who has the gift to artfully and organically combine or individually address these variant idioms. As such, he is highly respected and enjoyed by diverse communities from indigenous Arab population who seek entertainment from their original homelands, to purists who wish to preserve traditions, to dancers who thirst for modern fusion.

Egyptian-born Yousry Sharif, acclaimed master of the taktib, was a precocious entertainer and riveting young dancer from the beginning. He performed in numerous Egyptian television shows and films and with renowned artists Hassan Afifi, Mohammed Kahlil, and Warda, to name a few. His work with Nagwa Fouad brought him to America on tour. Ibrahim Farrah (NYC), witnessed Mr. Sharif's unusual talent and engaged him as principal male dancer and guest instructor at his school. Engagements included prestigious concerts at Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, Towne Hall, Merkin Concert Hall (NYC) and Warner Theatre ( Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.). Within a few years, Mr. Sharif established his own school as well as The Yousry Sharif Danse Ensemble, one of the rare, American-based groups assembled to bring genuine Egyptian folklore to the stage. The group was engaged to perform at universities, art institutions, and theatres including The Brooklyn Museum, Annenberg Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Detroit Institute of the Arts, and American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Hall of Fame, and with such famed artists as Lebanese singer, Sabah and Simone Shaheen. His ensemble also provided a platform for Mr. Sharif to broaden his creative scope from traditional renditions to original choreographies, for which he is now renowned and in demand. In 1992, Mr. Sharif was inducted into the American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Hall of Fame. His work is continually applauded by Western and Eastern media including The New York Times (Jennifer Dunning); Dance and the Arts, Habibi Magazine, Arabesque, and numerous international publications. Mr. Sharif has an uncanny ability to unearth exceptional new music from the Middle East from which he constructs his equally original dance designs. Along with Raqia Hassan and Nourhan Sharif, he has also produced high quality, classically-oriented CDs and performance videos of his choreographies which are an invaluable asset to students, professionals, and the sophisticated audience.

Grounded in Middle Eastern vocabulary, blessed with an acutely sensitive ear, and as an ingeniously creative artist continually questing for new expressions, Mr. Sharif has developed a body of work which exemplifies that unique synthesis of knowledge and originality. He is one of those rare masters of dance who has a distinctive "voice" – an aesthetic vision generated from musical inspiration – which demarcates his compositions with a signature vitality and authenticity.
